Note
When you are evaluating the spleen, both the ACR and AIUM abdominal Practice Parameters recommend calculating spleen volume as part of assessing for splenomegaly. These guidelines reference the study by Chow et al. (2016), which demonstrates how to use the prolate ellipsoid formula. A modified formula that can improve accuracy was proposed by Yetter et al. (2003). You will find simple, step-by-step examples of how to perform both measurements in the Pancreas and Spleen Protocol. If you would like to see how splenomegaly appears across different imaging modalities—ultrasound, CT, MRI—Radiopaedia has an excellent overview (Gaillard et al., n.d.).
